OSVSWA was established in the year 1980 by a group of eminent freedom fighters, social workers and social activists for initiating a movement to promote volunteerism and social action based on the Gandhian philosophy of rural development to create a self-dependant rural society. |

2. Thrust areas of work : Preservation of the environment, conservation of the nature and natural resources, rural reconstruction, poverty alleviation, enhancement of social integration, combating drought and desertification, rural accessibility and ICT for Development. |

3. Legal Status : Registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act as a non-profit society in 1981-82. Registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act in 1994. |

Initiative on ICT : IRMA-India (ICT for Development division of OSVSWA) is working on promotion, dissemination and application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among the rural poor, tribal, isolated communities for their access to information and strengthening livelihood. Its mission is to touch the last people as well as the full participation of these undeveloped communities into this development mainstream through ICT. |
